Beginning the Race of Faith for 2013
Hebrews 12:1-2 (NKJV) 1 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
The first day of 2013 was a good start to the year. About 25 of us went walking in the park. It was at least an hour walk and everyone completed the walk successfully. Many of us are focused on getting into better shape which means we our goal is to loss weight. We need to lay aside all of excess weight.
Some of this weight is the actual physical weight that resides on our body. While some of it is the cause of that weight. Excess stress, poor eating habits, lack of exercise along with lack of knowledge plague us. However, the author and finisher of our faith, Jesus, is concerned about every aspect of our lives. This includes our weight and health.
Sometimes, I think we forget about God when we think about our weight and health. I know we know how to pray for healing. However, we don’t go to the Lord first for our good health and well being. It’s as if we don’t want to burden God with this part of us. Ironically, we can never get away from this part of ourselves. Clearly, there is work for us to do and we are better equipped when we are in good health and focused on God’s purpose for our lives.
As it is the custom for many to make resolutions or set new goals for coming year. This is not just a race for our bodies; it is a race of faith. We are pushing toward new goals for this year and leaving the old behind in 2012. At every step, we will be taking the Lord and the Word with us.
Philippians 3:13 (NIV) Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead
